Islet Cell Autotransplantation in Total Pancreatectomy for Malignancy (Surgical Oncology SIG)

Learn the specifics of endocrine and exocrine pancreatic function while gaining an understanding of intraoperative harvest and preparation of islet cells and the use of islet cell autotransplantation in the setting of total pancreatectomy for malignancy. After this session, you’ll understand how you can best care for these patients in your own practice.

Objectives

  1. Describe the endocrine and exocrine functions of the pancreas.
  2. Discuss the harvest and preparation of islet cell intraoperatively.
  3. Review the transplantation of the islet cells.
  4. Explore the nursing care required to care for these patients.

I have written articles for CJON and chapters for ONS Surgical Oncology Book and Mosby's Oncology Review Book. I am currently editor for ONS Critical Care Oncology Book in publication.
